This November we had the chance to interview Isaac Rubio, a dedicated football player at Bowie Middle School, who unfortunately suffered a major injury and dislocated his knee on October 8th while giving his all on the field against De Zavala. Isaac’s story is one of dedication and passion.

“I feel that my injury was one of the biggest injuries in Bowie Middle School football because of how dramatic it was and how much it affected the ones around me,” Isaac shared. This was because all of Isaac’s friends posted on social media about how bad they felt for him and how much they hoped he would feel better. Seeing the posts made Isaac feel loved and cared for. One of Isaac’s friends even gave him a basket full of his favorite snacks to show their support and let him know they were thinking about him.

When we asked him about his favorite memory while playing for Bowie Middle School, he said, “when my friend Elian scored his first touchdown.” This showed how much Isaac supports and appreciates not only his teammates but also his friends.

On the day of the pep rally, Isaac was still in the hospital. The school held a volleyball and football pep rally to celebrate the season and share what they loved about the teams. During the football team’s presentation, they mentioned Isaac, shared how sad they were about his injury, and told everyone in the gym how much they loved him. In their final game of the season against Travis, Bowie won, and the team dedicated the victory to Isaac. They formed a circle on the field, and one of Isaac’s friends held up his jersey in his honor.

When Isaac returned from the hospital, we interviewed him again and asked what quote inspires him. He shared, “Even if you lose, don’t give up.” He also said that he always gives 100 percent, even when things get tough. Isaac admitted that even though he’s injured, he still wants to play.

To this day, Isaac is still recovering, with an expected healing time of 6–8 weeks. In the meantime, he continues to stay active, playing basketball in his wheelchair and hoping to heal soon so he can play on his feet again.
