This past Saturday, 11 Bowie Middle School students competed against the top middle school band musicians in Region 20 during the prestigious All-Region auditions. After months of preparation and dedication, several students earned spots in the highly competitive ensembles.
Here are the results:
- Caleb Martinez: 4th Chair, Symphonic Band
- Layla Milic: 8th Chair, Symphonic Band
- Lexi Mata: Honor Band
- Jordan Esquivel: 8th Chair, Honor Band
- Lia Silva: Concert Band
- Nolan Caro: Concert Band
“We are extremely proud of the work these students put in over the past months to prepare for this honor,” said Mr. Pogue, the Bowie Band Director. “We look forward to seeing them perform at the clinic and concert on December 14th at Duncanville High School.”
A Journey of Resilience and Teamwork
For many students, the journey to All-Region was as much about personal growth as it was about musical excellence.

“Honestly, I was sick during All-Region,” shared Layla Milic. “I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to make it to the school or even play.” Despite her doubts, Layla persevered.
“Last time, during All-City, I was really nervous, and I messed up a little—but I still made it. That experience taught me that everyone is nervous, and that realization calmed me enough to play.”
Layla’s persistence paid off. After advancing through a challenging first phase against 42 other clarinets, she secured a spot in the second band. “I was so excited because I didn’t think I’d make it that far. I played to the best of my ability, and it worked out.”
For Caleb Martinez, the experience was similarly nerve-wracking yet rewarding. “During the first phase, I felt anxious—I thought I wasn’t going to make it,” Caleb admitted. But once he started playing, his confidence soared.
“I played flawlessly and found out I got 6th place in my area. Moving to the second phase was scary, but Layla and I helped each other through it. We sat next to each other and mentored one another, giving us both the confidence we needed.”

Their mutual support paid off. Caleb and Layla finished the auditions with top placements in the Symphonic Band. “It was such an exciting moment to know we’d made it,” Caleb said.
Looking Ahead
Reflecting on the event, both students emphasized the importance of facing fears and embracing challenges. “Overall, it was a scary but exciting experience,” said Caleb. “It taught us to face our fears and hope for the best.”
Layla echoed his sentiment, adding,
“We are so proud of everyone who went and tried. It takes a lot of courage just to show up. We appreciate everyone who put themselves out there and gave it their all.”
With sights set on next year’s All-State auditions, the Bowie band students are ready to continue their journey of growth and excellence. “It’s going to be tougher,” Layla said, “but it will all be worth it if we make it.”
